What does an esthetician do?

Estheticians are licensed to perform skin care treatments including skin analysis, facials, waxing, and microdermabrasion. In some states, estheticians advanced their education and perform laser treatments, body contouring, or permanent makeup. After gaining experience, some estheticians may decide to specialize in one area of the industry: for example, waxing, makeup application, or the treatment of acne.

What training/licensing do I need?

This depends on state regulations. You can find contact information for each state's regulatory agency on our State Board Info page. In most states, you're looking at around 600 hours of schooling, though it can vary from 300 to 1500 hours.

Where do estheticians work?

Estheticians may work in a day spa or salon as employees or as independent contractors. Others may chose to establish their own business, working independently from their own home, a booth rental, or salon suite. For those estheticians that are able to perform advanced esthetic procedures, they may work in a plastic surgeon's office, dermatology office, or laser clinic.  Skin care is a job that can be done either full-time or part-time.
