How to Engage on Social Media with Automation

DM, or direct message, is a way of interacting more efficiently on social media platforms. DM automation is useful because it helps you turn casual followers into active leads or new clients by starting personalized conversations without requiring you to sit on your phone all day writing or responding to messages. The platform will automatically send a direct message to someone who takes specific action, like commenting a certain word on a post, or replying to an Instagram story.   

Is DM Automation Right for My Business? 

If you want more engagement on your posts or want to grow your lead list and promote time sensitive offers, DM automation may be worth looking into. It’s especially helpful for growth marketing, which means getting more eyes on your offers and more action on your posts.  

But it’s not fully automated. You’ll still need to monitor your automation campaigns, responses, and keep conversations going if people reply. Depending on the social media platform you use, free or trial versions may come with limits, like how many messages you can send or how many trigger words you can use.  

What Are Some Ways to Use DM Automation in My Business? 

Trigger word campaigns 

To drive engagement and get people booking with you, create a trigger word campaign for a special offer. For instance, if you are offering a facial promotion, tell your audience in the caption of an Instagram post to comment the word “facial” for the promotion link. Anyone who comments “facial” will immediately get the DM.  

This first message is important since it’s the gateway to opening a conversation with a potential lead or someone who may want to do business with you. Just sending this DM is not enough, though. We want the client to act and book an appointment. Create an opportunity to send another message with a booking link.  

Grow your email list 

If you have a regular newsletter highlighting seasonal offerings, availability updates, or new products, you can post it on your social channels to get more people to sign up. Consider posting an Instagram story with messaging like, “Want first dibs on monthly specials and open appointments? Reply to this story and I’ll send you the link.” You’re not just getting engagement on that story, but you’re also building a list of people who express interest in hearing from you.  

Run a giveaway with automated follow-up 

Hosting a giveaway is a great way to increase engagement in your social channels and reach more potential clients. People can enter your giveaway by commenting with a keyword. You’ll use DM automation to automatically reply to their comments on the post with entry instructions, a giveaway link, etc.
