Am I Qualified?
To serve as a barber member on the Board, you must:
- Hold a current California esthetics license
- Be a California resident
What Does the Board Do?
The Board protects the health, safety, and well-being of California consumers by regulating barbers, cosmetologists, electrologists, estheticians, and manicurists. Board members play a key role in:
- Shaping the direction of beauty and barbering professions
- Providing policy direction
- Participating in disciplinary and enforcement matters
- Evaluating and adopting new barbering and cosmetology rules
- Reviewing and approving license applications
- Helping ensure scope and standards are relevant

Board members are appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom. You can begin the process by completing the online application.
Once you’ve applied, you may be contacted for an interview, and a final selection will be made to confirm an appointment.
