Can Estheticians Safely Perform Peels in Warm Weather?

Chemical peels are a powerful tool in estheticians’ arsenals, but the question remains: should they be performed during summer? The answer isn’t black and white; it’s all about understanding risks, client suitability, and proper aftercare.

Why Summer Peels Require Extra Care

Chemical peels work by exfoliating the skin’s surface, temporarily stripping away the natural barrier that protects against UV damage. This leaves the skin highly sensitive and vulnerable to sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and even long-term DNA damage if exposed to UV rays without protection. This risk is heightened for clients with darker skin tones or those prone to pigment changes. UV exposure after a peel can also slow healing and increase complications.

Sun Protection and Aftercare

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, strict sun protection is critical after any peel. Advise clients to use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, reapply every two hours, and wear sun-protective clothing. Encourage clients to seek shade during peak sun hours and avoid tanning beds. These steps dramatically reduce the risk of pigment changes and support optimal healing.

Set Realistic Expectations and Client Selection

Set realistic expectations with your clients. Chemical peels are a process—not a one-time fix. Superficial peels can brighten and smooth skin, but deeper concerns like scarring or pigmentation often require multiple treatments and ongoing maintenance.

Not every client is an ideal candidate for summer peels. Carefully assess your client’s lifestyle, skin type, sun exposure, and risk of hyperpigmentation to create a personalized treatment plan and minimize risks.

Alternatives for Summer Treatments

For clients who are not candidates for peels in summer, suggest gentler options like enzyme exfoliation, hydrating facials, or antioxidant serums that support skin health without compromising the barrier.

With proper consultation and skin analysis, clear communication, and diligent sun protection, estheticians can confidently navigate the summer peel debate and offer safe, effective treatments year-round.
