What is Poikiloderma?

A common pigment disorder that appears on the neck and face; it is a symptom of chronic sun overexposure and is more common in women than men.

What Should I Know About Poikiloderma?

  • Also known as poikiloderma of Civatte, this condition appears as a horseshoe-shaped pattern of red and brown splotching caused by a mix of hyperpigmentation and distended blood vessels. 

  • It is considered a sign of severe sun damage. 

Considerations for Poikiloderma

  • The treatment of poikiloderma must begin with a commitment from the client to avoid sun exposure, especially deliberate exposure, and always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen. 

  • Topically, it may be treated with alpha hydroxy acid serums and peels, lightening/brightening agents, retinoids, and ceramides. 

  • May be responsive to vascular or pigmentation lasers.
