Indiana Modernizes Esthetician Scope of Practice

Indiana estheticians, this is your moment. Governor Mike Braun signed into law House Bill 1131 (HB 1131), and it delivers long-awaited, business-boosting updates to your scope of practice. This is a huge win that modernizes Indiana’s esthetics landscape to reflect the services its skin care pros are trained to provide.

HB 1131 expands the definition of “esthetician” to include:

  • Eyelash lifts and tinting
  • Eyebrow tints and lamination
  • Microneedling

The bill defines microneedling as a cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin at a penetration depth of at least 0.3 mm and not greater than 2 mm. At the request of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, anyone offering microneedling must provide proof of advanced training or certification. This is an important step that reinforces safety and professionalism while allowing estheticians to grow their service menus.

HB 1131 opens the door to providing more services, attracting new clientele, and increasing revenue opportunities. By aligning Indiana’s scope with many other states across the country, you can expect to stay competitive and build thriving businesses.
