In the esthetics industry, “hustle culture” is everywhere. It’s the mindset that prioritizes constant work at the expense of well-being. Theres a recurring message: work harder, stay booked, build your client base. But is this constant grind really the only path to success, or is it time to rethink the hustle and redefine what success looks like in the beauty industry?
The Pressure to Always Be Busy
There’s an unspoken expectation in the skin care world to always be “on”. We’re conditioned to believe that if we’re not grinding, we’re failing. The esthetics industry often glorifies being busy with long hours, packed books, side jobs, and no days off. This mindset is sometimes seen as a badge of honor, but behind all that, many estheticians face burnout and struggle to find work–life balance.
“What’s your side hustle” isn’t just a conversation starter—it’s a cultural expectation. And while being driven is admirable, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
Burnout is Real
Many solo estheticians carry the responsibility of service provider, business manager, bookkeeper, and more, and the nonstop drive to grow your business can leave little room for self-care.
Sometimes the best path forward is to pause, reflect, and give yourself permission to slow down. Taking time for yourself can bring clarity and balance.
What Does Success Mean for You?
Success has traditionally been tied to numbers: how many clients you see, how much retail you sell, how much revenue you bring in. But it’s possible to redefine success and include things like achieving work satisfaction, maintaining your mental and physical health, having time for relationships, hobbies, and rest, and most importantly, feeling fulfilled.
Of course, business development and all the things that go with it are important too.
The Hustle Mentality is Shifting
As more professionals begin to question the value of the hustle, new trends in success are emerging. In hustle culture, slowing down may be seen as risky; you may lose momentum.
But sometimes stepping back is just what you and your business need. Rest and reflection can spark creativity and allow for strategic planning. This can also give you clarity and perspective.
