South Dakota Considering Increasing Fees

The South Dakota Cosmetology Commission (Commission) is proposing a rule that would increase license fees in nearly every category.

Let’s look at the proposed fee increases and how you can voice your opinion before June 1 on whether they are reasonable or should be amended.

Professional License Fees

  • Cosmetologist, nail technician, or esthetician license renewal: $45 (currently $25)
  • Temporary cosmetologist, nail technician, or esthetician license: $6 (no change)
  • Initial and renewal instructor license: $45 (currently $35)
  • Apprentice license: $25 (no change)

Business License Fees

  • Initial salon or booth permit license: $75 (currently $60)
  • Salon or booth license renewal: $45 (currently $40)
  • Initial and renewal apprentice salon license: $300 (currently $250)
  • Salon reinspection fee: $75 for each reinspection (currently $50)
  • Inspection for a prospective salon or booth (at the request of the applicant): $75 (new)

School License Fees

  • Initial and renewal school license: $350 (currently $300)
  • Student license: $15 (currently $6)
  • Exam fee (includes initial license): $120 (currently $100)
  • Exam retake fee: $90 (currently $60, $70, and $80 for one, two, and three retakes, respectively)
  • Transferring papers to another school: $30 (currently $20)

Miscellaneous Fees

  • Lapsed license penalty: $30 for each lapsed year (currently $20)
  • Duplicate or replacement license: $15 (currently $5)
  • Reciprocity and initial license: $120 (currently $100)
  • South Dakota license certification to obtain licensure in another state: $30 (currently $20)
