Changes may be coming to cosmetology education in Ohio, and your input matters. The Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board (Board) issued proposed rule changes that impact cosmetology school layout requirements and distance learning standards.
Now is your chance to provide feedback: Submit your comments by September 22 to OSBCRuleReview@cos.ohio.gov and make sure your perspective is part of the conversation. ASCP gives you a rundown of the proposed rules below.
Minimum Station Requirements for Program Enrollment
The proposed rules would require schools offering cosmetology, barber, natural hair styling, or hair design programs to provide enough stations for at least 20 students, with additional stations if enrollment surpasses 20 students.
Manicure and esthetics programs would also have to meet this 20-station minimum, but stations for one program type won’t count toward another.
Distance Learning Guidelines
The proposed rules would impact how distance learning is documented, performed, and earned.
- Distance learning assignments must monitor student engagement. If a school doesn’t use a system that automatically tracks how much time students spend on projects, it must assign a set amount of time for assignments and document online student participation.
- Distance learning clinical services could be performed on mannequins only, not live models or clients.
- Distance learning would be earned if students complete all required training and pass certification tests.
