Michigan COVID-19 Update: Permission to Practice

On June 5, 2020, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued Executive Order (EO) 2020-114 (https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/MIEOG/2020/06/05/file_attach...), allowing massage therapists, estheticians, hair salons, barbershops, and nail professionals to resume business operations. Zones 6 and 8 (Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula) will reopen June 10, 2020. The remainder of the state will reopen June 15, 2020.
Guidelines for massage therapists, estheticians, hair salons, barbershops, and nail professionals can be found at section 11 of EO-2020-114. Detailed industry-specific guidelines will be issued today. Professionals will be required to follow the industry-specific guidelines, the basic guidelines in EO 2020-114, and the Department of Health guidelines, when they are posted. Important websites for you regarding guidelines and protocols are the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) (www.michigan.gov/lara), the Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MIOSHA) (www.michigan.gov/miosha), and the Michigan coronavirus website (https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/).
We have been in communication with LARA to clarify the rules regarding massage in a medical setting; however, LARA is currently working on their guidelines for returning to practice and we have not yet received clarification. We expect to have more information to share with members early next week.

Additional Safety Resources

ABMP, ASCP, AHP, and ANP understand there is a fine line between getting back to work and earning an income and protecting the safety of you and your clients. As you consider returning to work, we urge you to make government permission to work only one element of your decision about whether and when to reopen. Please review our comprehensive series of back-to-practice guidelines to help reduce risk and keep you and your clients safe.

We also have helpful forms and printouts available on our website, (https://www.abmp.com/back-to-practice/forms-printouts) including office policies, screening questionnaires, and posters to remind clients about social distancing and handwashing.

We appreciate your membership and will continue working on your behalf to update you as we learn more. Be safe and be well. Please check our COVID-19 page (https://www.abmp.com/updates/news/information-abmp-members-state-shutdow...) for updates.
