Pro-Aging with Peptides

By Skin Script Team

Our dermis has a complex architecture and with age, this architecture is compromised. This alteration is universal and the root cause
of the main visible signs of aging. What can
assist with building and restoring this architecture? Peptides.

Peptides consist of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins and make up our skin, which includes collagen, elastin, and keratin. Amino acids join to form a peptide bond. They direct our skin to act and make skin care more functional by helping ingredients perform.

Peptides were originally researched regarding wound healing; studies showed peptides were instrumental in increasing collagen production. If the skin is damaged for any reason, structural proteins are broken down and peptides are released. The skin interprets these peptides as a signal to make more proteins. The human body is magic!

Peptides in Skin Care

These building blocks are remarkably beneficial for the skin. Acting as crucial messengers, they signal various processes in the skin. They have diverse functions, including collagen synthesis, hydration, and antioxidant protection. Found in many skin care products, peptides help reduce inflammation, even out skin tone, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Here are a few of the skin benefits of peptides:

  • Collagen production—Collagen is a protein that provides the skin with structure, elasticity, and firmness. As we age, our production of collagen decreases, which creates wrinkles and fine lines. Collagen-boosting peptides can improve skin elasticity, diminish the appearance of wrinkles, and reduce skin sagging.
  • Hydration—Peptides that have humectant properties attract and retain moisture. This helps keep skin supple, plump, and moisturized.
  • Anti-inflammatory elements—Some peptides help combat signs of aging caused by stress and inflammation. They can soothe, reduce redness, and protect against harsh environmental impacts.

Where Can You Find Peptides?

Peptides can be derived from various sources, such as plants and animals, or they can be created in a lab. They can be enhanced with common skin care ingredients like retinol and vitamin C. Retinol, a type of vitamin A commonly used in skin care products, is highly effective in improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. Vitamin C is another very popular ingredient in skin care products, supported by dermatologists and recognized by consumers.

There are also specific peptides that can be used to address skin concerns. Kollaren is a biomimetic peptide derived from a signal peptide. It increases the firmness of the skin by activating collagen, elastin, fibronectin, and laminin. Kollaren encourages tissue renewal
and restores the biomechanical properties of the skin.

On your client’s journey for healthier skin, peptides are a must. They are a valuable addition to any skin care regimen.
