FAQs
Permanent makeup is also referred to as cosmetic tattooing, micropigmentation, or micropigment implantation. This technique is achieved by inserting pigments into the dermal layer of the skin using a permanent makeup device with a very fine needle. Permanent makeup is performed to enhance your client’s natural beauty and give the appearance of makeup. It can also be performed to camouflage scars, stretch marks, or uneven discoloration.
Each state has different rules and regulations. Some states require a tattoo license while other states require training and certification under an esthetician or cosmetology license. It is not uncommon to apprentice before working on the public. In all states, proper training with hands-on experience should be obtained. Hands-on experience includes live models as well as practice skins.
During the initial permanent makeup procedure, the skin will be saturated with pigment and will swell. As the skin heals, it may reject some of the pigment. A second appointment will be necessary to fill in those areas that start to show less color. Once the tissue has completely healed, in about 4–8 weeks, the first touchup appointment can occur. To keep permanent makeup fresh and maintain desired results, your client should return every two years.
Each state has varying rules and regulations. As long as you are working within your state scope of practice and also carry an esthetic or cosmetology license, you are eligible for coverage. For information on scope of practice by state, ASCP members can go to the Advanced Esthetics State Regulation Info page.
Whether you are performing microblading only or other permanent makeup procedures, we’ve got you covered. Indicate all the procedures you are performing on your application to be sure you’re covered. If adding microblading to your existing permanent makeup insurance, the cost will be discounted to $0 and rolled into your permanent makeup coverage.
ASCP’s permanent makeup insurance includes coverage for eyeliner, lip liner, lip blushing, eyebrows, microblading, beauty marks, areola restoration, and permanent makeup removal with saline. Advanced pigment procedures like scar camouflage, scalp pigmentation, and cheek blushing can be added to this coverage for as little as $240.
